Why do all cat collars have bells?

Besides to hear them coming in the house, wouldn't it spoil their chances of catching something? Its also hard to sleep at night hearing bells everywhere. Where can i get cat collars without the bells. i thought of using a small dog one, but they dont have the same breakaway as the cats.
What if the cats are indoor cats?

That's pretty much the reason they have bells; to warn birds and mice that a predator is coming. However, that never seemed to work for my cat... You can remove the bells quite easily from the collars if they really bother you.

that is the point of bells, to reduce the chances of them catching birds and other animals. but some cats learn to keep the bells quite while hunting. my cat always takes the bell off his collar, don't ask me how, and if the bell won't come off, the collar does.
just buy a cat collar but take the bell off. your right the brake away is important

Just remove the bell, should be easy enough. I never noticed that they all come with bells, looked at petsmart, and you are right! LOL I think it's so you know where they are and so does the "prey". Not sure why they put bells on cat collars though! Strange.
