Can't go back now

I have been with my boyfriend for five months; I have known him for three years though. Everything was great until summer started. Then he became very distant it seemed he wanted to tell me something but he just couldn't get it out. Then tonight it all made sense why he has been acting this way.
My friend texted me we were just talking and then he asked how things were with my boyfriend and I. I told him that he has been super distant and that I think that he is ignoring me. The next text I get from him is saying ''you know matt isn't come back to (insert name of my school) he's going to (insert name of the school he is going to.)
I was shocked I couldn't believe it and apparently he has known since July; I can't believe he didn't tell me! I then texted my boyfriend saying ''I wish you would have told me you weren't coming back next year.) and he hasn't texted me back. I can't believe this.
I'm not going into details but, I won't be seeing him anymore. I don't want to break up with him but, I know I have to. I'm seriously sooooooo upset right now. Please help
