I joined because I thought it was the right thing to do at the time for the country. As for the raw power of wielding a gun, the enemy had guns, too and I, and I'm sure other military people, didn't feel powerful at all.

I needed a job and a way out of the house. I graduated from high school in a very small town, basically I had three choices, the military, the mill or prison. I choose the military. Being a military brat did make it an easy decision though.
Because I had nothing better to do and my conservative father made it a point of principle to kick us all out of the house the day after our 18th birthday and telling us he never wanted to see us again.
