Why did they make Blues Brothers 2000?

What possessed Landis and Akroyd that this would be a good idea?

The first film (which you either love or hate) pretty much captured American culture at the time. It was zany, OTT but still a funny film with a great cast and a nice tap along soundtrack

Blues Brothers 2000 (aside from its uncountable number of cameos from Wilson Pickett to a misplaced Eric Clapton) is a mess

surely if it was to conserve the memory of Belushi, it would have been better to let the original film standalone alongside the SNL series as opposed to this massacre of a movie

Even Aretha Franklin doesn't look that bothered when she encores R.E.S.P.E.C.T

Why does anyone do any job? Because they got paid, I'd imagine. As Michael Caine said about Jaws: The Revenge: "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."

I don't see Blues Brothers as about money (it certainly didn't make any) The entire cast was pretty much at the height of fame and John Landis was still reeling out the hits, it must be something more than that

a misguided tribute?

Hmm.

Not sure about that.

By my reckoning Coming To America was his last box office winner & that was over a decade before The Blues Brothers was dredged up again.

it might have come out of the live performances they have been doing, they have performed at Vegas and Chicago and stuff so maybe the idea just came from that. Not seen the new one yet myself so cant comment on how bad it is.

Why do any sequels get made though ? It's easier than coming up with something original
