Why did the Watchtower omit these words in later publications of this book?

In 1969 appendix of the Kingdom Interlinear the Watchtower Society reiterated it claim that Christ died on a "Torture" [added word that is not in the original text, under their own admission] stake.

"....there is no evidence that a cross with a crossbeam was ever even used by Romans during the first century. They claim the stake was "the then customary usage of this means of execution in the Orient."7 They maintain, "The evidence is, therefore, completely lacking that Jesus Christ was crucified on two pieces of timber placed at right angles...."

later in that same section there was another statement "The passing of time and further archaeological discoveries will certainly prove it’s correctness."

Since that writing, archaeological discoveries have proved that the cross was a normal method of crucifixion in those times and the later books were published without reference to "further archaeological discoveries."

Why remove the statement about "further archaeological discoveries will certainly prove it’s correctness."
as it proved to be wrong yet leave the bit that has also proved to be false, that Christ was crucified on a stake and not a cross.
