Why did the USA and the Soviet Governments desire peace in 1946?

hey, i really need some help, i have to do an essay and i need to know why the USA Government desired peace and the soviet union Government desired peace in 1946 then i need to say which argument is the most convincing?? i really wanna know what their views are of each other and why they want peace!
