hello i drive a 2005 mazda rx8.... and it feels like it needs brakes, but i have taken it to mazda and they say it also needs rotors... ... why did they wear out??? were they supposed to wear out???? cuze i also have a 97 hyundai elantra and i've driven it for like 8 years and i've changed the brakes like 3 times and never the rotors.... are rotors supposed to wear out, or did they wear out cuze i drove it even though i needed brakes???... any help.... they are charging me $500 to replace just the front rotors and the brakes.... any one knows where i can get them cheaper??

I cannot confirm or deny the specific vehicle you ask about but a lot of modern vehicles are going to one use rotors. They are less expensive to manufacture and gain a better after initial purchase return for the dealers parts suppliers.(They make more money that way)

Ford started that trend with the Escorts and Mustangs in early to mid 90's

If you waited too long to replace the pads, it will ruin a rotor. Also hard braking can warp one and necessitate replacement.
There are no rivets in modern brake pads, shoes maybe, but this is seldom.
Before you go and cut loose with all that money, try a different shop. I say this for several reasons, here are but a few:
1. Shop rates are highest at a dealer
2. OEM parts are more expensive then aftermarket parts.
3. Dealers will charge OEM prices even when the parts put in are aftermarket.
About any place will be cheaper then the dealer. NAPA is one of the most expensive places to buy auto parts and below is the link for the rotor. No labor, but it is only 1/2 hour to do the job (for an experienced mechanic). That is per wheel.
You should be able to get a nice up-grade for the brakes at the dealer quoted price. See the e-bay link. I am not endorsing this product as I never dealt with them, nor installed any brakes on a RX-8. So shop with care and/or learn how to do the brakes yourself. But be aware that ABS and traction control systems take more care when doing a simple thing like a brake job.
