Why did the pH level in my fish tank increase from 6 to 8.5? I am not using any chemicals or buffers, but there was an increase in turbidity and dissolved oxygen.
It was the oxygen that changed the pH level. The oxygen molecules can bond to the hydrogen from the water, forming hydroxide ions (OH-). Base substances also release hydroxide ions when in water. The hydroxide ions in your tank give it a basic pH.
