Why did the Garden of Eden need a Tree of Life?

If Adam and Eve would have lived forever if they had not disobeyed God, why was there a need in the Garden for a Tree of Life, which conferred immortality?

Don't be silly, it was a meatball tree in the Garden of Eatin', according to the FSM (may sauce be upon his great noodlyness). But seriously, I don't get why God would create a "paradise" and the plant a forbidden tree right in the middle of it.

Like most works of fiction it requires a reason why the imaginary friend was incapable of creating fully compliant minions. So to explain why some individuals have the ability to make their own choices, outside of the religious dogma of the zealots, the tree. In other words the zealots would prefer that all are kept ignorant and simply follow. That of course keeps the zealots in their preferred position of arbiter of all things good and eveil, having all others kissing their ring.

And yes I will save them the trouble of saying I shall burn for ever, or atleast until the last thingammy and the final distribution of whatever your dogma ahhh pleghm
