Why did the first bicycles have a stupid huge front wheel?

All those super old bicycles made during the 19th century. Why would they make them with a giant front tire and a small back tire? And made then so hard to get on? Why not use two of the same sized wheel!?!?!? Were we even bigger idiots back then than we are now!?
