-Why wasn't there a World War 3?
-Luck? Skill? M.A.D. (Mutual assured destruction)? Khrushchev?

The world does NOT need another world war. Both the US and USSR knew that, and they worked very hard to prevent a nuclear war. The closest the two nations have gotten to starting WWIII was during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both countries were ready to fight (they had missiles, boats, everything was ready) but Kruschev called it off last minute, and a compromise was struck. Both nations wanted to prevent WWIII because with nuclear weapons, everything was different.

Because the USA and Soviet Union never announced war on each other, and never faced each other in direct combat.

The cold war was a time period characteristized by psychological and indirect military action between these two parties. It left people on edge, because they kept waiting for the war to break out, but it never did.
