Why did rivers and seas provide better transport than overland routes to a kingdom in...

...the olden times (500AD)? Were there more boats and ships than horse carriages and bull carts? Or sea travel had a more direct and quicker route? I think that the people in the olden times did not want to go through the trouble of feeding the animals used for transport.
 
Because frankly, travelling by ships is much faster (unless you get blown off course). You don't nee dot do anything but steer and let the wind carry you. And also because ships can carry cargo and heavy things, and you don't have to get some poor animal to pull you.
 
depends where u were travelling from.
in about 500AD there were extremely limited numbers, if any, renegade (pirate) ships. so the waters would have been extremely safe, whereas the overland routes could come across war tribes or just gangs of bandits.
Feeding animals was not a significant problem
 
i think because it's more comfortable riding in a boat, except of course during storms. if you travel by land, the way is bumpy no matter if it's stormy or sunny.

and also because it is probably safer. i think there are more thieves than pirates. to be a pirate, you would need a sword/knife/gun and a pirate ship. to be a thief, you would just need a weapon.

and also i think boats are faster, that is if it's windy and you have a good captain who knows how to take advantage of even the slightest wind. If you're travelling on land, you need to stop at night to get some sleep. If you're travelling by boat, you can sleep and still the boat continues to travel.
