Why did Red Barn burger restaurants go under?

In the 1960's and early 1970's, there were many Red Barn fast food outlets in the eastern US and Canada. Then the restaurant was bought out by another company which decided to absorb its assets but close down the restaurants. Does anyone have a sense of why this business decision was made? Were Red Barns losing popularity/customers? If so, why? The Red Barn in our Scarborough neighborhood was sometimes grungy inside, although this may have not been the case with other franchises.
