devil’ rant? Does it give you the impression that Pat is used to telling stories that he knows aren’t true, he just pretends that they're true, but on this particular occasion, he wanted people to believe he was telling a true story?
 
Pat believed it to be truth. To HIM it WAS the truth.

I hate when people don't check the facts.

"Truth" is relative.
To him, and his perception, maybe the things he says are true. That doesn't necessarily have anything to do with reality.
 
It might be because even though it's a true story, it's so strange and out of the norm that he knows people won't believe it.

Even though he said "true story," I have my doubts. I think he's exhibiting signs of dementia.

Bones: Robertson graduated from Yale Law School, I believe, and started a multi-million dollar organization including tv stations all over the world, relief aid, and a university. You might not agree with what he says (I don't) but it can hardly be argued that the man isn't "bright."

But he has been losing it over the past several years.
 
He really meant to say "And I just made all that up because it sounds good, and will get people to send me more money" But it just came ot wrong.



Actually, the real reason - because that is what it said on the auto-cue.
