Why did NASA send a chimpanzee into space?

They are about the same size as humans, anatomically and physiologically they are similar, so they could get a good estimation of the effect space travel would have on humans, without having to put humans at risk. If there were problems with re-entry, they would also not need to worry about a lot of investigations if a chimpanzee dies, if a safe re-entry was planned at all.

seriously, he just wouldn't get out of the capsule.

they even tried bananas, and those guys are supposed to go gaga over bananas.
