Why did my VGA signal splitter lower the image quality?

I just started using a Gigaware USB-Powered VGA splitter so I can view the output from my Dell PC on two monitors. The PC is running Windows 7 32 bit and has 4 gb of ram. There is 256 mb dedicated video memory. One monitor is a digital Dell. I don't know the model number, but before I used the splitter it was working beautifully at 1680 X 1050 resolution. After I connected the splitter, the monitor displayed the message "cannot display at this resolution, change to 1280 X 1024". I adjusted the setting and the monitor now works, but the picture quality is not nearly as good as before. The other monitor is a Westinghouse, also normally a high quality image, and also now compromised due to the addition of the splitter. Is there anything that I can do to improve the resolution and picture quality? Thank you.
