why did my service engine light in car came back on after passing inspection?

i have a nissan sentra (01) with about 59-60k miles on it and i had my O2 sensors replaced by the mechanic, along with routine other things on the car such as oil/filter change etc. this was to clear a check engine light that had been on for several months. after that was done, my car was inspected and passed on the computer. 2 days later however, my check engine light came back on even after just passing inspection. what would be the reason for this and what should i do? thanks!

your mechanic screwed you over. Haha, cars that are 96 and up and even some 95's have obd2 Systems that have "monitors" the mechanic clears codes which reset monitors. then the mechanic drives the car till enough monitors are ready. on your 2001 it can have two monitors not ready to pass inspection. your mechanic probably left the last two monitors not ready just to get by. if i were you i would take it back, i understand what the mechanic did, nissans are a pain in the rear to run monitors ready.

Well, first of all, take it to any auto parts store, and have the codes checked. It may or may not be an O2 code. Assuming that it is, your mechanic pulled one of the most common technician mistakes, that is replacing the parts, without first finding out why they failed. This is the automotive equivalent of taking an aspirin, taking care of the pain, but not the cause of the pain.
