Why did Lincoln and the Republicans choose a man like Andrew Johnson as VP? ?

He was the only southern senator who stayed loyal to the union. Lincoln wanted to balance the ticket to appeal to the border states and northern democrats.

And? He was also a self educated man, a man who made his own way into public office. He was from a border state that could help influence voters.
Do you think he was the only one drunk there? Where did you get this information anyway? Did you not know that he had typhoid fever and "Appeared" intoxicated? Easy to pass judgment when you were not there. Easy to be perfect, like you, is it?
We should wait 100 years and see how history judges you, if it even notices.
