Why did he stop communication with me?

Know a guy for 4 years, finally told him how I felt. Asked if he was in a relationship he said no just had a "friend" We begin to text the next day ( even offered to bring me lunch). This was from thurs.- sun... (on sunday he asked could he come relax/hang out at my place next sun.) On Monday I texted him,Tuesday just said a quick good morning ( which he usually texts me)... I let weds & thurs go with no communication from him... Thurs.night I told him it's ok if ur not interested, hope we can still be cordial. He replied at 5:30 the next morning "we're cool & cordial"... He then texts that he has a valid reason and respects me too much to play with me or disrespect me... Then when he gets off work sends me a text asking how my day was. Does this mean he's a player or dating someone? and doesn't want to hurt me. I did nothing to have him end communication. (he never called said he didn't like talking on the phone, but i could call him if i wanted)
