Why did Harley Davidson give up?

I just can't buy a bike from a company full of cowards. Why did they stop making new, higher performing variations of their V-twin in the 60s, get out of the street bike racing equivalents of MotoGP etc THAT THEY HELP FOUNDED, sell the company to American Machinery and Foundry and decide to play the 'our bikes have soul and are an American tradition' game while the Japanese and Europeans left them in the dust in every way/laughed at them.

America strives for first place in EVERYTHING. All Olympic sports, hot dog eating contests, automobiles, war technology, computer technology most damn near everything...........except motorcycles. Where we've convinced ourselves that "Uh, we don't NEED any more HP than that because speeding is dangerous and stuff! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to take the Dodge Viper on the turnpike for a spin."

PS The Buell 1125R and the V-Rod Destroyer are the only REAL American different bikes...and you can't buy the Destroyer, whose engine was helped made by the Germans! Some odd dirt bikes don't mean crap, either.
Uncle Bo - Buell wants to be 'American Bullet bikes' and their bikes suck ass in comparison to Japanese and European ones. Their are so many aftermarket HD engines because the HD engine SUCKS and enterprising Americans see a buck to be made by making a PROPER V-twin.

And only first in the things that matter? What a line of crap. Your argument has more holes in it than Swiss cheese, sir.
