Why did GM go bankrupt?

So people say it's because people don't like their cars - but they sold more cars than anyone in the world last year and so far this year (except Toyota) - so that's kind of a ridiculous statement.

It seems to me they couldn't downsize fast enough - probably since the majority of their labor is Union.

Am I wrong here?

Is this just another case of an efficient non-union company (Toyota) out performing a bloated in-efficient Unionized company?

I agree with you completely that GM sold far fewer cars, largely because they had big in-efficient vehicles. But, like I already said, they still sold the second most vehicles IN THE WORLD last year and so far this year. They are still selling a TONS of cars, more than anyone except Toyota. How is it that Honda, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, sells far fewer cars than GM, and make $$ while GM goes bankrupt, this is the question.
