Their Nobel Prize page says "for their pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena."

It seems like it encompasses his whole life, so what exactly does this award entail? What specific contributions did he make to win the award?
