Why did farm animals have bells around their necks back in the day?

Just curious why farm animals had bells around their necks back in the day. My thought was in case they lost the animal they could hear it jingle off in distance.
 
You are correct. Animals would get lost all the time. Bells helped find the animal.
 
One reason was indeed to keep the animal from getting lost. The other was that people thought (and still think) that bell-ringing dispersed "negative energy" or "evil spirits."
