Why did everyone whine so much about the government phone scandal?

They only listened to international calls, incoming or outgoing from a terror suspect.
If an invasion of privacy is all it takes to keep our country safe, I see no problem in it.
Why did people complain so much about it? Unless everyone in America is having conversations with terrorists, it doesn't affect them.

hmmmm.
They are terrorists for Christs sake! People who want to destroy us!! Fact: There was a plot to terrorize Seattle, a plot which was halted because we listened to conversations.
Do you not remember 9/11? We could have prevented it.
Technically, we were spying on foreign calls, so doesn't that make it OK?
*shrugs* I don't care if the governemnt listens to my calls. They may get a few laughs, but I have absolutely nothing to hide.

yes. i agree with you. everyone needs to chill out. the only calls that american citizens were picked up on were calls placed on government phones with big stickers on them that said "subject to surveillance"... doesnt anyone listen?!

But, just like some people feared they took it too far:

The EFF alleges that some telecom firms, including AT&T, had given the NSA direct access to their databases of communications records. This allows spies to see data on who customers had called or emailed. In its lawsuit the EFF alleges that AT&T, in addition to allowing unlawful wiretaps, gave the government "unfettered access" to its over 300 terabyte "Daytona" database of caller information. AT&T collaboration with the NSA breached longstanding communications privacy laws, the EFF charges.

"The NSA program is apparently the biggest fishing expedition ever devised, scanning millions of ordinary Americans' phone calls and emails for 'suspicious' patterns, and it's the collaboration of US telecom companies like AT&T that makes it possible," said EFF staff attorney Kevin Bankston.http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/02/01/atandt_wiretap_assistance_suit/

In defending the previously disclosed program, Bush insisted that the NSA was focused exclusively on international calls. "In other words," Bush explained, "one end of the communication must be outside the United States."

As a result, domestic call records — those of calls that originate and terminate within U.S. borders — were believed to be private.

Sources, however, say that is not the case. With access to records of billions of domestic calls, the NSA has gained a secret window into the communications habits of millions of Americans. Customers' names, street addresses and other personal information are not being handed over as part of NSA's domestic program, the sources said. But the phone numbers the NSA collects can easily be cross-checked with other databases to obtain that information.http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-05-10-nsa_x.htm

Yes, there are people who what to destoy us but what is in place to protect YOU from being tapped even when you don't call another country?
Do you really think it's ok to listen in on people without oversight? Without cause?

*********************************************

The fact that you and others don't mind all this is scarier then "terrorists" because, in essence, you’re allowing one form of control over another in order to "feel" safe.

Tell me, what classifies someone as a "terror suspect"? And what is in place to stop them from classifying you as one?

Bush had our own spy sattelites aimed at us here in the U.S.,on our own citizens, the FBI and CIA have admitted to abusing even the New Xtra Power they have been given~!

do some research, it will annoy you~!

They have to listen to them all to get the words. If You want to be monitored, Stay in the USA. Big Brother is here.
And doing great work.
Thank God that Bush is blamed for this. I have hemorrhoids, that are bush's fault.

Not only that but whining causes global warming and I'm freezing here.

Ok, you seem a little naive so I'll try to break it down for you.

First, because they did it without a warrant, which is in violation of our 4th amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure.

Bush ordered the government to listen to phone calls without a warrant. The warrant makes it legal. So not only is it an invasion of privacy, it's a violation of the Constitution.

The government could be listening to your phone calls every day, and you would never know. They don't have to tell you. But they can arrest you based on what they hear, and send you to Gitmo and torture you, and never have to tell you why.

Also, they don't just listen to "terror suspects". They have programs running algorithms to key in on specific words or phrases in every phone call, so they can look for "links".

The government doesn't just have a list of people they listen to. They listen to it all. And their list of "suspects" is over a million people long. Doesn't that frighten you, even a little? Either that 1,000,000 people are enemies of the US, IN the US, or the government thinks there are that many here!
