why did army pistols attached to holster via string back during ww2?

i seen a lot of pics where Russian German and Japanese lieutenants, officers and commanders had on their pistol grip a hole for string attachment and the string would connect to the holster.

i mean what was the point of this? was it just to not be able to loose your gun? or did it have more meaning to it?
