Why cant the ANDROID OS being simplistic the BB OS?

Why does "Synchronization" need to be turned on in order to send Instant Messages and to receive emails instantly? It was never that way with a Blackberry and because its Android, we all know that the battery dies in the same day or has to be charged twice in order to make it past midnight. So, why make SYNCHRONIZATION a requirement? That will kill the battery even quicker.

Having both my gmail accounts synced and gtalk constantly signed in doesnt really take anything away from my battery life at all that is incredibly concerning.

Well, for starters this thread fails because it mentions Android and BlackBerry in the same sentence. I am sorry, but as a previous BlackBerry owner and CrackBerry forums top poster... they are not even close to being in the same league. Android blows BBOS out of the water. Not only is the OS far better, the hardware for Android devices is much better. I would take an Android device (from HTC or Motorola) over a RIM device hands-down.

I will give RIM credit for manufacturing the best QWERTY keypads on the market and having very secure and business-minded devices... but they are just not very appealing for consumers.

That aside, I am still confused by the thread title and topic. What is this supposed to mean? My Nexus One works fine and last through an entire day on one charge. Honestly, why does my device need to last longer than a day when people charge their phones every night anyhow. I plop my N1 in my home dock every night and use it on my nightstand as an alarm clock and weather station.

Data use is a TINY amount of power drain on the battery. You seem to be complaining that Android has the choice to turn it off if you want to. There is no difference between a push email from a BB server, or a push email from a Google server. It takes around the same amount of data, and hence battery power. I don't know if you can turn it off on a BB, but at least you do have a choice on Android.

Have you tried looking at (assuming Android 1.6 or higher) Menu -> Settings -> About phone -> Battery use, to see what is actually killing your battery?

I have a bunch of apps running in the background, and I use phone phone a few times throughout the day, and I typically have around 60% battery left by the time I go to bed.

If your battery isn't lasting a day then you have to question what you're running on it or doing with your phone. Are you treating it more like a laptop by playing games and browsing on it? It may have a processor approaching the speed of a laptop from a couple of years ago, and a laptop probably has a battery 20x the size, but does it last a full day? Or 20 days? Nope - it lasts an hour. Think about that.

Agreed, if the OP looked at his battery usage, he'd see other factors impacting the battery like the screen, or wifi, or running processes.

I'm still working out how to improve battery performance, I'll be rooting the device and looking into how to (first locate) install one of the kernels that purport to increase battery life. I've noticed that leaving on wifi seems to have a negative impact on the battery. More so then my iPhone, I found that on the iPhone leaving wifi on increases battery life over 3G. I'm finding this to be the opposite on my nexus

Well that's the drawback of having a system that has more capabilities.

On the iPhone it's much more restrictive in what you can do on it in terms of networking. Android essentially sits on top of a Linux kernel, so it correctly responds to all network traffic. This also means you can open up ports on it, run servers on it, even run bit torrents on it (there's an app for that).

The downside is that every time any network traffic goes to it, it wakes up for a short time to respond. That uses the battery power.

Just watch the flashing lights on your WiFi router and you'll see how much network traffic is bouncing around.

i wonder if it will make a difference to set the wifi sleep policy to never. i would figure mobile network wastes more and it switches to mobile by default when the screen sleeps.
