Why can't people just read the twilight books, enjoy them, and leave it at that?

Why is it that I am reading stories of girls who have dumped guys over Edward Cullen. Or girls who "love" Edward and want to hunt him down to become immortal and marry him?

While I agree that a good book can be captivating and enjoyable I can't understand how people allow themselves to obsess. I even read about a guy saving for surgery to look like Edward so his girlfriend wouldn't dump him. I enjoyed the books but I'd never want my boyfriend to change to become Edward Cullen. I love him for who he is, not who he could or "should" be!

I enjoyed the Harry Potter books but never tried to dump my school for Hogwarts!

Fiction is an escape from reality, not a replacement...

I think this was more of a rant than a question. Feel free to comment though
