Why cant I see Japenees letter on Google Chrome?

I recently downloaded google chrome and I tried to look at Japanese letters and all that comes out are empty squares. Why does this happen, is there something that I need to download. I heard that I need to download Office XP but I don't where to download it. Someone please help me.
