Why can't I play DVD videos and DVD's of burned songs on my computer?

I open up windows explorer & open up the D drive to play the DVD but I get a message saying that I need to put the DVD in my drive when it is already there. Do I need to download any software to enable me to play DVD's on my computer? Thx.
