Why can't I listen to the full MIDI files?

I'm making a game on RPG Maker and when I listen to the music, it always sounds like it's missing some instruments and all I'm hearing is just the beat. When I convert the files to WAV or MP3, I can actually hear the sounds that were missing. Can anyone help me with this problem?
