Why can't I import my music library to Windows Media Player 11?

wmp 11 is not meant for vista 32 and vista all together is bad news
but Solutions are:
get itunes (it allows a wide variety of formats)
downgrade to windows xp (reliable and universal compatibility)

I recently bought a new computer with Vista 32 bit home premium. I have a large library of music on an external hard drive, and I moved the library to the internal hard drive of the new computer, specifically the default Music folder.

The problem is that Windows Media Player will not add the library. I've done it before on other computers and it has always worked fine, but this one won't find the songs. It adds songs when I individually play them one by one in the player, but not on its own. It also doesn't add videos, and doesn't even add them when I play them.

I have tried deleting the library and adding it again, because some people have problems with the indexing or something, but that didn't work. I've been advised to uninstall WMP but that is impossible as it is built into Vista's architecture.
