Why can't I get the boss key in the first temple? (Zelda)

Just finished this and I thought it was pretty easy. The one I had the hardest time with was the one that went down the hidden stairs in the main room.

I somehow managed to beat Dark Link super quickly and easily when I beat Ocarina. Not really sure how I managed too, but I did.

You had to slice his back or something. Something that just took entirely too long to figure out.

He would block everything when you Z-Targeted him I realized, so I just attacked w/o z-targeting. That worked for me quickly.

i never even managed to beat dark link without the goron sword so i always did that before the water temple

Dark link is easy to defeat, just use the hammer. It can't copy the moves of the hammer because he's holding a sword, or in other words who wants some smashed potatoes?
