Why can't I download ringtones to my phone?

My parents bought me a new mobile for x-mas but when I try to download a ringtone from the internet, it comes up with 'cancelled'. I've tried a few different ones now, and each time it fails. My parents think the phone hasn't been registered, but the manual that comes with it says that when it's bought from the shop, it should automatically be registered. I can call and everything, I just can't dl songs, and I refuse to have the rubbishy free ones for life =O
