Why can't GM, Ford, and Chrysler just get rid of the UAW?

How difficult would it be? I know profitable retail corporations close stores where unions try to organize. Is it that difficult for the auto companies to get rid of the UAW, and just start replacing them with non-union employees? Are there provisions in place that require the auto companies to hire only UAW workers?
