Why Burn Incense Outdoors?

Well, if you were trying to avoid fire alarms, or if the place of residence has a no incense rule, yet you still wished to burn incense for spiritual, religious, or other reasons then burning it outdoors may be the only option.

To pray.

When my parents visited my grandmother's grave in Taiwan, they burned incense and prayed. There was a sort of mantelpiece where there were pictures and those incense vase thingys.

They're Buddhists.

"Humanity didn't even have much of an "indoors" at one time.."

That is so irrelevant to the question. Incense was surely created long after humanity created "indoors."
