Why are weird noises coming from my Hifonics BXi2008D?

I have had this BXi for over a year now. All of a sudden, very high pitch (and oscillating as well, 1khz ~ 8khz or so) sounds are going through to the subs, even with the high pass on 45hz. Also, the protect light does come on, but it isn't hot, fuse isn't blown, and all my connections are solid. Subs are 2 MA audio 15" XL series, 1200 watts apiece. Also hooked up is a 5 farad capacitor, all 1/0 gauge power wire, 8 gauge to the subs.

so up until today, it has been working fine, gain set about half way, low pass on 15hz, high pass on 45hz, phase a 0, Bass EQ at 5 db, and running along side with 2 crossfire 404's.

The problems:

high pitch sounds
protect light
if i turn the gain up to far, the subs will "knock" so to speak, but really the amp is sending power to the subs even with no rca cable plugged in; and it is decently loud ( about .5" of excursion each sub)

it will still play music, but the other sounds take over and then the protect light eventually comes on.

Any ideas, thoughts?

Thanks, Josh
