Why are we studying evolution and a bit of cosmology (Big Bang) in Human biology? What's the point of comparing ourselves to other organisms? Why aren't we studying strictly the human body systems?
Answer
Question 6 answers
a. Studying these things helps to put humans into perspective - and gives a much broader understanding of our role in the universe. It allows us to make connections and bridge disciplines rather than just memorizing a bunch of facts.
b. Only studying the human body systems would make this a strictly anatomy & physiology course - which it's not.
c. Studying evolution in general helps us to understand more about ourselves as humans - what other organisms are we closely related to, as we move back in time, what lineage of organisms did we come from, etc. It allows us to appreciate that humans are a branch on the vast tree of life.
d. Comparing ourselves to other organisms helps us answer questions about ourselves - for example, anatomy would study the bones in the body, but human biology not only studies the anatomy, but also answers the question of where did those bones come from to begin with?
