Why are we now a civilization that likes our toilet next to where we eat/sleep?

At what point in human civilization did we decide, "hey guys lets put the crapper (toilet) inside the house, and cook and eat our dinners outside."? I'm sorry, but crapping next to where you eat and sleep goes against nature in almost every species. Back in the old days they did keep out houses "outside" who's the lazy genius that brought it in the house?
For your info guys, been there, done that, it's too easy to get spoiled with modern "essentials" I lived like that for two years, yes it was tough. espesially in winter.
 
You toddle to an outhouse at midnight in the dead of winter and then sit there in the fumes of past visitors and wonder if a spider is about to bite your ass and we'll see how soon you want to give up modern plumbing.
