why are we interested in media coverage?

Well...an old newspaper publisher once told me...." the reason people read newspapers is to find out who's been caught" , and I've not heard anything to the contrary in my 61 years.
 
why is it that today, our society/the public is interested in everyday news/media coverage? what really is media coverage by definition?

i have to write a persuasive essay about this. and need more ideas on what to base my body paragraphs about. i'll have an intro, three body paragraphs, rebuttle paragraph and a conclusion paragraph.
i have to prove that the people (we) have an appetite for media coverage.
please give me some opinions or ideas or whatever.
