Why are we concerned with saving the environment?

If we take a bird's eye view of our situation on earth, saving the environment and recycling is really pretty silly. Eventually the sun will go out or flare up on us and destroy life on earth. If that doesn't happen an asteroid will crash into the earth and destroy humans if not all life. If that doesn't happen the climate will change and kill us off like it has killed off countless species in the past. If that doesn't happen etc etc etc.

Why are we so compelled to go through the silly meaningless acts of recycling aluminum cans and buying silly looking hybrid cars in an effort to save an environment that sustains us for a relatively short while and then destroys us?
