why are vodafone trying to say i have a 24 month when i took out an 18 month contract?

i took out a new contract with vodafone in july 2008 they told me it was for 18 month not 12months when i tried to cancel they say its for 24 month i told them i would not have taken a 24 month contract what can be done?
