Why are there so few Ford and Dodge teams in NASCAR?

There are only 7 Dodge and 7 Ford teams who run a full schedule in NASCAR this year. I hear rumors that Petty Enterprises is going to Toyota leaving only the 3 Penske cars driving Dodge in 2010. Roush has had to cut Jamie McMurray reducing the Fords to 6 full time teams for 2010. Why are Chevrolets and Toyotas dominating NASCAR? I know loyal Ford and Dodge fans who are feel cheated when only Chevy and Toyota seem to be winning all the races because they have all the cars.

I've wondered about this myself.
I used to get annoyed by those Chevy commercials that sais bragged about it being the most winning car maker in NASCAR. No kidding. The odds are stacked in Chevrolet's favor when more than half the field is running in them.
I know, my favorite driver's in a Chevy, but I'm just sayin'...
 
It comes down to money. Dodge cannot afford to support the teams in the same way as Chevrolet and Toyota. If RPM leaves Dodge, it will be because they cannot afford the association. I'm not really sure about Ford, but I imagine that to avoid bankruptcy, they have cut back Nascar spending. Does anyone really buy a Ford just because Carl Edwards drives one? I have a Dodge, but we've had that longer than Kasey has been in Nascar! I wouldn't say I feel cheated that Chevy and Toyota are winning the races, but it's a little disappointing. Especially when my tax money went to help bail out GM...
