I just brought Clerks 10th Anniversary DVD today and it made me remember how comercial movie makers can't come up with their own ideas. I know Clerks isn't a "comcercial" movie but I just wish the stuidos would take a risk... for example, here is the USA top 10

Charlie and the choc factory - based on a book, once a movie before

Wedding Crashes - new movie

Fantastic 4 - another Marvel franchise

War of the worlRAB - loosely based on the book/radio play

Batman begins - 5th series of a DC franchise

Mr and Mrs Smith - Origional

Dark Water - USA remake of a japanese movie from a japanese book

Herbie fully loaded - another herbie moive

Bewitched - remake of a tv show

Madagascar - new film

Everything seems to be a sequal or a franchise. I know its easy money and the studio's are a business but please, dont some of these people have a new creative idea???

Anyone agree? or disagree?

New ideas are anathema to Hollywood. Why do you think the best work is being done on US tv? Even there originality has a struggle to survive e.g. Deadwood, Sopranos, Dead Like Me and it's feeble copy, Wonderfalls.
Hollywood can't afford to take chances with untried material. Movie studios are happy to distribute a completed film which may be a risk but will not invest their own money in big budget gambles.

i know what you mean but unless the films are a major box office disaster it will carry on , get ready for these

The Omen
The Wizard of Oz
The Day of the TriffiRAB
The Flash
Wonder Woman
The Time Tunnel
King Kong
Fantastic Voyage
Day of the Dead
Superman
The Man from Uncle

Thinking about it, the last one that surprised me was "Eternal Sunshine...". But then, it was based on a French book and directed by a Frenchman (with a script by Charlie Kaufmann that helps).

I can only recommend (again) that you check out Ireland's "Adam & Paul", Hungary's "Kontroll" and Thailand's "Beautiful Boxer". In fact, the Asian movies in general are more interesting as they mix weird and wonderful visuals with a popular touch.

Screenplay Europe
PS: A mention also for the UK's "Layer Cake". Not a masterpiece but well entertaining.

Well they say people want two things, something they're already familiar with and something they've never seen before, these remake films fulfill both criteria I suppose.
Someone mentioned some good TV work like The Sopranos. That is the work of one writer with a vision. Films seem to be written by about 15 people nowadays, no wonder many are an unsatisfying mess.
