Why are the letters "g" and "a" made differently from written letters in some

styles of fonts? For example, this "a" here is shaped different from the way you'd write an a normally. I can't give you an example of the "g" being different in this style font here, but I'm sure you've seen it before. it basically looks like the top and the bottom of the lowercase "g" are connected by a line over to the left instead of the right and the bottom of the "g" gets closed off.

Why are they like this?
