Why are the French often portrayed as "cowards" in the media?

I was always curious about that. To what incident do they refer when they say that?

(For the record, I love the French people. Very decent and friendly, generally.)
So what exactly did they do (or didn't do) in WWII?
 
they just laid down and let hitler walk all over them.
i have nothing against french people either.
but history is history.
