Why are some of my emails in my inbox not in bold, as if I've already read/opened

them...when I haven't? This has been happening for a couple weeks now. Never was before, but I've missed reading several emails because they were not highlighted as "new" in my inbox.
I did recently change my password because somehow someone pirated my contact list and sent spam out under my yahoo email address, although it didn't show up in "sent" emails. Same thing happened to my husband a couple weeks later. I'm getting fed up with yahoo email - if I continue with these problems I guess I'll have to change.
