Why are some authors using "ante" instead of "pre" example ante-dates rather than...

...pre-dates? I don't understand what purpose is served to swap prefixes that have worked for centuries if not longer. Ok, i suppose ante does mean "before" or "prior" , but so does Pre.

Is this part of a larger plan, or just a few authors' stupid quirks?

One specific example of an author who does this is Charles Murray in a book published a few years ago.
I have NEVER seen "ante" used as a prefix in any book written before approx 2002.
Just my observations. What do you think?
