why are so many records being set in swimming this year?

evolution maybe? these current swimmers probably have a better body build for the water. haha

the suits help the most in the water. and probably the new training methods too

New suits developed by speedo,
evolution of the stroke - strokes are taught to be faster since we have a better understanding of the physics
better training
more natural talent

Records are broken because training is different, it's harder and better. Increased competition is a large part of this, what used to be exceptional and record setting is the norm because everyone is being pushed to that pace.

Not just swimming but all sports in general, people are full time athletes now in a way they have never been. So they have the time to dedicate themselves to insane amounts of training.

If Phelps was a track and field athlete or in the Tour de France, he'd be accused of doping. I don't get how it is just assumed he is that good (not a conspiracy theorist and I fully believe he is that good), but it seems odd that he hasn't come under any scrutiny.
