Why are so many people so wrapped up in their sexuality?

With some famous people in the media, seizing an opportunity to "come out of the closet", I ask, what's the big deal? Isn't our sexuality something that should be kept amongst only those we truly care about? When did sexuality become such a predominant subject for the populace forcing me to wonder, 'who cares?'
