Why are so many of the craiglist rants so bigoted, nasty, and viperish?

Yeah, yeah I know I should just stay out of bad online neighborhoods, but I would really like to know. I have never seen anything as crude as this. Do you think it is healthy to have an online site where people get to openly and yet anonymously vent their worst thoughts and desires? There is a part of me that is glad to know how or what some people really think, but there is another part of me that is just disgusted. I originally started reading those posts to get the inside scoop behind the hardened faces of New York Cith and the smiling faces of Madison, where I will be moving soon. Now I can't even look at anonymous people on the trains or on the streets of New York (or even Madison) the same way, without wondering, "Is it you? Is it you? Or is it you? Ewwww..." Ha. Oh wow... Maybe it is good to have a place where people can vomit online or let their demons out--anonymously. What do you think?
Correction: New York City (you know... the proverbial Big Apple)

because they're a bunch of anonymous cowards who know good and well if they really spewed that same kind of garbage in real time, they'd probably get smacked into next week!

Thing is, none of this is really new. Only difference now is it's done online and not just behind closed doors.

Don't let those idiots steal your joy. There are many good and non-prejudicial people out there, too.

You are witnessing the true nature of some people, there is some hatred and racism in most people. The people who don't have these feelings are rare. This is what you are seeing online.

It's because there are no moderators and no way to identify individual people. Therefore, anyone can say whatever the hell they want. Unlike yahoo...
